Днес лудницата продължава с пълна сила.
От правителството не се чува нито дума. Дали са още в Токио, или са вече на път за Бразилия? Г-н Кан, г-н Озава и прочее шмендикапели от демократическата партия, що стаа? Де сме, ко праиме? Телевизията по места показва, че хората се оправят сами кой как може … Ролята на държавата се изчерпва за момента с решението на Bank of Japan да насипе малко ликвидност на пазара. От лидерите на държавата има само изявления от вчера и оня ден.
В 11 часа местно време, реактор №3 във Фукушима-1 хвръкна във въздуха. По телевизията показаха нисколетящи бетонени блокове на 100 метра над реактора. Правителствени говорители обясниха от Токио, че радиация няма, че активната зона на реактора не е засегната и че нема от какво да се притесняваме. След което обявиха евакуация на всички от 20км зоната и замолиха всичи в района около централата да си стоят вкъщи. Според някои, специалисти от американския emergency response team са били докарани да помагат. На пресконференциите от централата излизат недоспали служители, които фъфлят и заекват.
Междувременно в Токио паниката не стихва. След като вчера беше обявен режим на тока, повечето частни железници съкратиха радикално броя на влаковете и разстоянията, на които те се движат. Нашата гара, която уж е близо до центъра, стана крайна спирка. За много хора пътят от дома до гара, от която има влакове се измерва с километри. Най-доволни от ситуацията са вероятно таксиметровите шофьори – празно такси днес не съм виждал още.
Сутринта в 5:30 по улицата покрай линията имаше колони пешеходци. По обяд, всички са вече на колела, влаковете все още не вървят. Токът все още не е спиран, но режим има.
Повечето магазини и заведения са затворени. В няколкото, които бяха отворени сутринта имаше опашки, влизаше се на малки групи – изобщо, мила родна картинка.
Пазарът в Tокио се срина с 650 йени. Падна всичко, освен акциите, които бих купил. Ех, земетресение 
Режим на тока в Токио. Ха!
От утре до края на месец април, по три часа на ден във всички предградия на Токио. За мой късмет, засега в центъра не се предвижда режим, но спирането на тока ще докара маса главоболия. Проблеми ще има за всички – от спрели светофари, та до проблеми в болниците и клиниките без собствени генератори.
Причината за проблема е, че заради земетресението са спрели няколко централи на север и изток, а възможността за подаване на ток от югозападните райони е малка, заради разликата в честотите на тока (в Канто и нагоре мрежата е 50 херцова, на юг – 60).
Земетресението хвърли Япония в посока България от 1986. Дано се разминем със събитията от късния април.
Update: понеже ме питат от няколко места за херцовете, причината е, че на запад производството на енергия е започнало в края на 19 век с американско оборудване на 60 херца от General Electric, а на изток – с европейско от 50 от AEG. Към момента, в който двете мрежи са се съединили е имало твърде много съществуваща инфраструктура, за да се уеднаквяват и херцовете. Между двете мрежи има възможност за подаване на енргия, но тя не е достатъчна да покрие разликата от спрелите реактори.
The day after/На следващия ден
Ден след земетресението в Токио беше мъртвило. Половината магазини и заведения – включително и големи вериги като Старбъкс. Привечер повечето супермаркети бяха изкупени. При нас токът не е спирал още, но в някои вестници пише, че токът спира в някои райони на Токио.
На втория ден, в неделя, нещата в Токио се нормализират. Mетрото и железниците вече работят, в магазините в центъра имаше тълпи от хора, но имаше и мляко, месо и пресни зелечуци.
Проблемите са на север, където усилията за спасяване на хората и имуществото, пострадали от земетресението и цунамитата вървят с пълна сила.

Според съобщенията и предаването на живо, в повечето от пострадалите райони нивото на наводненията е все още високо, но има организирани спасителни екипи, които започват работа по спасяване на пострадалите и възстановяване на щетите.

Useful android apps
Apps/features I like and use a lot:
- Locus, the map tool. For looking at, saving, using maps. Awesome, although it isn’t free anymore. Totally worth the small fee.
- FBReader, the reader. For reading fb2 and epub e-books. Awesome.
- Sketchbook mobile (or the free Sketchbook express). The sketchbook. For sketching. Awesome.
- RSS Demon, for reading RSS feeds. The paid version is nearly awesome.
- CamScanner, for scanning stuff into PDF ebooks. The free version is very good, the licensed one is almost awesome, it just needs to make selection of “enhance” mode easier on a page by page basis.
- Barcode scanner – a killer app in Japan. Mostly useless in Europe, because nobody here uses 2D barcodes. But people type REALLY FAST
- The stock camera app, hacked not to make noises. The 2.3.3 version is a bit improved, but the panorama feature still sucks.
- HDR Camera+ – for pretty HDR pictures. Better than what I used to use – the HDR Pro Camera – faster, better alignment, three images.
- The hardware sensors and a stylus.
- ezPDFReader – freehand PDF annotations on the phone.
Missing features:
I hope for more sensors in the coming device versions – humidity, pressure, pH, infrared camera, built-in turbolasers, proton torpedo guns, tractor beam generators, a shield and a cloaking device would be the useful minimum. This will turn the tricoder into a really useful app.

My app list, because I did not find a satisfactory one on the Internets. In alphabetical order.
- 3dSteroidPro – simple application to make “stereo pictures” on the phone. The kind of “stereo” you cross your eyes to see. So-so.
- Abacus – an Asian abacus, just like a calculator but weirder. Totally optional.
- AdFree – requires rooted phone, removes ads (adds add hosts to /etc/hosts). Must have.
- Aedict – Japanese dictionary, edict based. Must have.
- AlcoDroid – measure your alcohol intake . Read the disclaimers.
- AndRoad! – OSM map and navigation application. Neat, add-free and opensource. Very nice.
- Android Assistant – great application management tool. Must have.
- AngryGPS – in Gingerbread. Add an “activity” shortcut, or dial *#*#3214789650#*#* to access.
- Astro file manager and its bluetooth and smb access modules. Works well, but the icons aren’t my favorite. Good, but seems dead upstream.
- AstroTools. The only useful astronomy package on Android so far. Must have (for me).
- AutoCAD WS. Display 2D autocad files on android. Neat.
- Air Horn Free. Pleasingly annoying to other people. 8/10. I wish my speakers could make more noise.
- Bloomberg – read the bloomberg free news. Okay.
- Bubble. Turns the phone into a bubble (нивелир), really useful when installing shelves. 8/10.
Bulgarian Keyboard 2. Works fine, but doesn’t integrate well with Japanese input. 7/10.Replaced with Multilingual keyboard, see below for details.- Connect bot. SSH. 10/10.
- Cool Reader. I ended up using FBReader, but this is also great, except for that pesky organization of libraries. 9/10.
- ConvertPad – converting between various units. Okay, 5/10.
- DrumSession – funny drums app. Audible delay is a bit of a nuisance though.
- ElectroDroid. Excellent aid for the electronics nerd. 10/10.
- Expense Manager
- Facebook. Well, for facebook. 5/10.
- FBReader. My book reader, for fb2 and epub books. 11/10.
- Google sky map. Kinda useless sky map app. 5/10.
- GPS Test (free). Good for testing the unusability of the built-in GPS. 9/10.
- Grapher – graphs functions. Very neat, 8/10.
- GuitarTuner and gStrings free – to tune your musical instruments.
- IMDB, because I am too lazy to bookmark. 6/10.
- imo – instant messaging client. 7/10.
- LED Scroller 3 – when I want to signal the person across the table in a dark room, nothing does the job better. 8/10.
- Locus Pro + addons. THE BEST mapping application. 10/10.
- LookOut, malware protection. ?/10.
- Memo – for memos. MomentDiary – for memos + picture. Still looking for a good app.
- MultiLing Keyboard – excellent keyboard replacement
- mVideoPlayer – videoplayer with bookmarks.
- Opera Mobile – the browser. 10/10, much better than the built-in browser in 2.2, but the browser in 2.2.1 is getting a bit closer.
- Overlook Fing – an excellent network explorer/port scanner.
- Paint Joy Pro – nice drawing app. Can make a movie of the drawing too. 10/10.
- Periodic Droid – all you need to know about them chemical elements. 10/10.
- Photoshop Express. Yet to test out this properly.
- Picasa Tool – for uploading stuff to Picasa. 8/10. Speaking of Picasa, account creation and synchronization failed at first, but started working miraculously after two weeks of bitching to Android Market Support about unrelated issues.
- Polar finder. Find the Polar star – useful for telescope mount alignment. 8/10.
- ProHDR Camera – good.
- QuickPic – Gallery replacement. Neat, but has some bugs. 7/10.
- RingDroid – ringtone creator. Free, ad-free, opensource and good. Must have.
- RssDemon +License – for reading RSS feeds. Very useful, except for feed items ordering. 8/10.
- RealCalc – a good choice for a scientific calculator. 8/10.
- RoadSMS – look at the ground when you type walking. Samsung app, 4/10.
- Satellite AR. Where is the ISS? What satellites are overhead? Interesting.
- SBM – Sketchbook Mobile from autodesk. 11/10, see above
- Screen Filter – manage screen brightness, the biggest power drain on the phone. 6/10.
- Shuffle – tasklist app.
- Seesmic – twitter and facebook client. Better than the “official” apps in some ways, and comes in one piece. 6/10.
- Simple Kitchen Timer – finally something that can set a timer at over 99 minutes. 10/10.
- Skype. 10/10.
- SmartTools – compass, level, sound meter, etc. Must have.
- Smart Training. Recording tracks, calculating distances, etc. Useful, but clunky. 6/10.
- Superuser – granting you the r00t.
- Terminal emulator – android shell app. 8/10. Now with SU
- Theodolite – well, a theodolite which also takes pictures. 7/10.
- ThinkFree Office – built in. Useful (for reading PDF files, mostly), creating an online account is not needed.
- TitaniumBackup – an alternative to the Astro file manager’s backup function. Can backup pre-installed applications, settings, etc. Requires r00t. 8/10.
- Tricorder – the Startrek app. Useless, but neat and makes funny noises. 6/10.
- tTorrent – neat bittorrent client. For those rare occasions …
- Unzip – for unzipping.
- VoiceSearch – I am impressed. No Bulgarian, but Japanese, Chinese, English and Russian work surprisingly well. 8/10.
- VidTrim – trim videos on the phone. Very useful.
- Wifi analyzer + the free library for connection management – very useful. 8/10.
- WordPress – much better than the web UI on the phone. 9/10.
- XDA + license – support the teams that r00t your phone and provide alternative ROMs.
- witiz weather premium. okay weather widget.
- xda premium – the xda forums interface. must have, support the hackers.
- xPiano – to annoy people more than the Air Horn
- WordPress.
Still looking for:
A good stylus.
Overall impression: recent smartphones are about on par with my old Dell Axim, except for the much better hardware, the more useless bells and whistles that the “apps” have, and the shorter battery life under prolonged screen use.
We’ll see how the 3700 mAh battery I just ordered fares. Update: too bad I left Japan before it was delivered

Some Japanese phone providers seem to do automatic upgrades without permission
I woke up this morning to find my mobile phone dead with a black-on-white text message saying something like “Your firmware update has failed. Please take the phone to an AU shop for repair”. Which would not be a big deal, except that it happened without me having downloaded any updates, or authorizing one.
A call to the AU customer support center revealed that AU apparently pushes the firmware update to the phone, but then allegedly asks the customer and waits for a “final authorization”. Except, in cases like mine, where they just went on with the update, and then ruined the phone without that extra authorization step. (Information was involuntarily volunteered by someone Mr. Morikawa Morikami from the Customer Support center, who, when pressed, admitted they push software to the phone without authorization, but then promptly retracted his words, just in case). AU then refused to provide information, investigate further the alleged phone fault, or to take steps to mitigate the situation beyond servicing the phone at my expense and (in)convenience.
I wonder what other data does AU access on the the phone — and why do they need to bother — they have, after all, all the packet data and the voice going through their networks anyway. At any rate, after today’s conversation with the AU customer support, I’ll be switching the phone company, although I doubt it will make that much of a difference. Having a phone with a backdoor isn’t on my list of must-have items.
Left with really weird taste after this experience.
